14/10/2015 at 3:53 am (5 years ago)Dear, I can relate to what you are going through. I long to go on a walk early in the morning after fajar Salah. Sometimes I just want to be alone to read or type a blog post uninterrepted! When I'm flustrated, I start counting my blessings. Things which we are flustrated about are things which others long for. Kids would grow up soon. Then, even if we want they will not stick to us like this. So, I decide to enjoy the mess, tantrums, noise and every thing else connected to my kids (Better smile than cry)

15/02/2016 at 10:07 pm (5 years ago)Assalam alaykum sister, i came across your blog a few months back. Alhamdulilah your blog was a wake up call and a call to action. I always read to my son (and he loved books but also TV) but was not sure how to move from teaching him the alphabet to reading. We are not planning on homeschooling so although i wanted to personally teach him to read i always thought i couldn't and will wait till he started school. But alhamdulilah you showed me what was possible and we are well on our way by the help of Allah. Alhamdulilah I got flash cards and we have now completed the set 1 phonics. I got the read with biff.. set. So inshaallah i need to just start encouraging him to read it. Do you advise he knows some sight words first? And how do i go from teaching him the phonics to encouraging him to read. Jazakillahu khayran

21/02/2016 at 11:49 am (5 years ago)Assalamualaikum Sister I transitioned my public school third grader to now homeschool and it was scary! Now im super happy and so is he. I just gave birth to a new baby so I have been tired and emotional but i am doing my best. I keep telling myself even an hour of learning is better than nothing at all. I have picked out educational movies and easy to pick up worksheets for days when i cant teach because of my newborn. I just want to say thank you, i dont know anyone else that is homeschooling in my neighborhood or community. Alhumdulilah i am still learning. My friends and family look at me weird and say oh it's a lot but since our transition, the hardest part really is to maintain energy to do everything outside of teaching, you are so right MashaAllah. May Allah reward our household with patience and knowledge as he has rewarded yours inshaAllah. JazakaAllah Sister This is a great blog Salam

The kids had eye tests recently and the optometrist was telling about how atleast an hour a day outside does so much good for their eyes as they train their eyes to look at things in the distance as opposed to being close to books, or screens or anything else indoors that is quite near to them.

With the new tech generation children don't want to go outside but it should be encouraged. I think for children it's best to find what interests them outsides, some may not like the same things so forcing them they won't want to go outside. Great post 🙂

Abbie
29/04/2016 at 12:45 am (5 years ago)Yes, we do need more and more Muslim toy and they need to be up in competition with general toys sold in markets. There should be variety, good quality, and strong branding. Because kids see Disney toys, movie merchandise, and they are more prone to be attracted towards them. I found Ibraheem Toy House pretty nice. My favorites are the little prayer mats. It is very important that kids play and learn! Another favorite was the stuffed dolls – soft Maryum is my favorite.

Islamic toy stores are definitely important – every Muslim home and community needs to have access to good ones. Alhamdulillah for pioneers such as these.
And there's no better time to foster genuine Islamic identity in our children as in their growing up years and through play. Baarakallahu fih.

16/05/2016 at 6:58 pm (5 years ago)Ma shaa Allah! I don't have any children but have always thought of home-schooling, especially considering the standards of the education system in the US. I'm not really sure how the concept would would in Saudi, but the butterfly habitat is a great idea even for a summer or after school activity. I've always been fascinated by butterflies (I blame Mariah Carey) but their transformation is astounding. Yusuf and Aamina are adorable, I love seeing toys geared towards Muslim children, far too often toys (especially for girls) are over sexualized and completely inappropriate! Thank you for sharing, I will definitely be sharing these ideas with my 2 co-workers, who have children!
Gemma
17/05/2016 at 6:31 am (5 years ago)Firstly, LOL to the Mariah Carey comment! It is comletel astounding the way the caterpillar transforms. Did you know that if you were to cut open the cocoon, it would be of slime….and fro that a butterfly is formed! Subhanullah!

27/06/2016 at 1:37 pm (5 years ago)Salam sis, jzk Allah for sharing all this. Wish I had come across before ramadan.
I have 2 young boys 5 and 3 mashallah tabarakallah. This year I wanted to make ramadan fun for them so I decided to blew balloons for the last 10 days so they pop each day and receive a deed and a treat inside. We bought a tent for Itikaf so we sit and reflect and say little prayers. Weve visited the library and borrowed books on ramadan and Eid.
I bought a yusuf doll and made him our ramadan guest. Kids were delighted! I printed some resources from smartark like a simple counting date game. I made a 'welcome ramadan' bunting with fabric and felt. I also printed some arabic picture flashcards for 30 days from a site (cant remember which) which can be used to find in the Quran.
We made iftar platters for the surrounding neighbours and little tags explaining what Ramadan is all about 🙂
Might try and purchase the cookie cutters in sha Allah.
Really inspired by your homeschooling. May Allah reward you.
Would love a set of the books so I can start with my kiddies!!

18/08/2016 at 9:40 am (4 years ago)assalaamu alaikum, ma shaAllah. This is my first time visiting your blog. I love this post! both of my children are quite young so we haven't started formal homeschooling, but I love what you've shared with us, and it really does help build my confidence as I gather ideas from various homeschoolers. Especially Muslimahs who are homeschooling. May Allah bless your efforts.
To answer your questions… while I am new to your page and I haven't explored everything you have to offer yet, I personally love routine videos and blog posts, day in the life kind of things. They really help me decide what I want to or am able to incorporate into my family's life.
I'm fairly new to the homeschooling community as in I haven't implemented much of what I've been exposed to, but I do know there are already a lot of resources out there, and I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can for the time being, so anything about how to jump into homeschooling helps! Also, talking about the pitfalls or difficulties involved in homeschooling, which would help those of us starting out so that we have an idea of what to expect and how to work through those obstacles if and when we hit them.
Looking forward to your next post!

22/08/2016 at 7:18 am (4 years ago)Hey.. I am new here but I've been following you in Instagram for months now & I love your work! I am from Maldives and homeschooling is kind of new here.. Almost no one I know, homeschool here but I adore the idea of homeschooling.. I studied teaching but I honestly don't want to go teach in schools, leaving my son at day care.. Instead I believe homeschooling is the perfect option for both of us.. So yeah your blog is really helpful.. Thank you so much ❤️
First of all I like the idea of wrapping up the school supplies and giving it to the kids.. It's an amazing idea and plus point is we get to see their beautiful smiles!!!
I would like to know more about how to and when to start homeschooling.. And also since my boy is still a toddler, can you suggest ways of getting him to get closer to Islam?
Other than that please suggest more books I can read, regarding homeschooling and parenting.
I'd like to see how you prepare for the day and how you select activities and all..
Thanks again
You're doing an amazing job with your kids.. Keep it up
Hope to see more posts from you

15/11/2016 at 8:07 pm (4 years ago)Masha Allah, I can feel the positive vibes you took away even from your written words. It's always a blessing to be among visionary/ creative Muslims.
I think mothers can run their own businesses as long as it doesnt interfere with their primary responsibilities. The Ummah needs the entrepreneurial outputs of Muslimahs on so many levels. Happy you had an awesome experience.

15/11/2016 at 10:37 pm (4 years ago)Masha'Allah all such inspirational women. We really need women like that as role models. I think the questions you ask really depend on the individual women. I am waiting for my youngest to start school before I decide what I want to do…want to focus on her for now.
Really hope I can attend the expo next year in sha Allah.

16/11/2016 at 4:42 pm (4 years ago)The ending…it described it all in one scene ❤ that's how we juggle motherhood and businesses. We utilise tiny chunks of time. Sometimes it means sacrificing your own me-time and giving it to your business. Which, in one way, is also me-time lol. I love sabah, naz and zanib. Amazing amazing women mashaaAllah ❤

22/11/2016 at 9:01 am (4 years ago)I loved watching this Gemma 🙂 It was so wonderful to go about your day with you! I am still on the fence about homeschooling – (atleast for now) for one of the reasons you addressed – your youngest needing to be occupied. Nusaybah really needs to participate in an activity with us or we can't do anything at all. That even includes reading! So we're struggling with that at the minute. How do you occupy Khadijah on the other days when your husband is at work? x
Gemma
28/11/2016 at 10:37 pm (4 years ago)I totally understand you concern about that. Even today, we found it difficult to keep her entertained so we could work. We try to get work that requires quiet (like reading) or any crafts done whilst she is sleeping. I try to get her involved in group activities where possible. This toddler phase will pass, so I just try to relax and accept that it's not going to be "perfect". All I can do is my best! Thank you for watching and for your supportive comments about the video 🙂

30/11/2016 at 5:00 pm (4 years ago)The gratitude journal for kids seems like a great idea. We read from easy reader library books of elephant and pig. They have a bunch and it's easy to read at their level. Also we were going to do a gratitude scavenger hunt once I figured out what to look for that the kids are grateful for but I think doing a gratitude journal daily would really go hand in hand with that as well.

02/04/2017 at 6:45 am (4 years ago)Subhanallah mashallah I’m amazed at how thoroughly you homeschool AND have time to run such a successful and information rich blog!
Regarding explaining compassion-how about making some simple packages for homeless people? Homeless people can look quite scary but showing compassion -I think- is about being sympathetic and helpful to everyone despite it maybe feeling initially uncomfortable. Because it’s easy to feel compassion in some situations and not others…
Or you could donate items to local refugee families? Or sponsor a child? We go through action aid as you get a letter and drawing from your sponsored child every few months (probably dependent on country and postal system!) and we write letters back. More of a long term compassion project but could also involve learning about sadaqah!
Gemma

26/05/2017 at 5:09 pm (4 years ago)Can you recommend a reading list for various homeschooling methods. I’ve read a few but would love your insight.
Gemma
02/06/2017 at 11:55 am (4 years ago)For Charlotte Mason, I would recommend you read the books she wrote herself, “The Original Homeschooling Series” (http://amzn.to/2qNKxo5). It’s a long book! For Classical homeschooling, I like “The Well Trained Mind” (http://amzn.to/2ritX3e). If you’re interested in the Montessori Approach, again I would recommend reading the works of Maria Montessori, “The Absorbent Mind” (http://amzn.to/2rj0beN).If you’ve already read all of those, please feel free to email me, and I’ll send you the title of other books I’ve enjoyed!
Shannen
09/06/2017 at 5:39 am (4 years ago)I’d also like to add A Thomas Jefferson Education. It’s quite friendly with other methods, but gives some great ideas along the way. As for unschooling, I can’t say that I have read any of these (yet), but books by John Holt are classics in that movement, and I’ve heard good things about the book Free to Learn.
Hope that helps!

17/06/2017 at 10:33 pm (4 years ago)I have these Arabic playdough cutters. The kids love them and learn as they play.
Cooking is great for kids. My teenage son wanted a cake for iftar the other day so I told him why don’t you bake it? As he was mixing in the ingredients, he was asking what’s the bicarb of soda for? Why do we need the squeeze of lemon in a cake? Then he answered, oh the bicarb is a base and the lemon is the acid so the two reacts and makes air bubbles for the cake to be light. Spot on son!

Gemma Somauroo
10/07/2018 at 7:03 pm (3 years ago)Salaam. Yes, I do like it, but it can be a little dry. Whilst it shows children the “how-to” of Maths, it doesnt explain the why. So we like to supplement it with other books like Life of Fred.

I thought it was just play at this age. I haven’t started teaching my kids to read yet. But, I think I can let my 3 year old try the trial, because I trust your opinion. Thanks for sharing.
Gemma Somauroo
08/09/2017 at 2:03 pm (3 years ago)Walaykum assalaam. Yes we are still following the guidance of Charlotte Mason. In her works, she advises parents to delay formal academics until children are 6 or 7. However, she does advise parents to begin to teach pre-reading skills (like letter recognition) earlier through play like writing letters in a tray of sand. Isn’t that a lovely idea!
Reading Eggs is playful learning. We primarily use Reading Eggs with my 5 year-old, and my toddler just watches! I will probably allow her to use it once she is closer to 4. However my eldest son did use the programme when he was 3.
It really does depend on the nature of the child. They’re all different!

Magic and Mayhem
26/09/2017 at 7:56 pm (3 years ago)We believe strongly in the first step too, and have a house full of books. We read to our kids often and also model a love of reading books ourselves. We have never used any kind of reading curricula, though. All of our children learned to read quite naturally with just reading to them often, talking about how the words go together, and playing simple games I made up (such as concentration style games matching simple words with their pictures, or spelling words with letter tiles).
My oldest child read her first word (boo) at age 3 and was reading fluently by 4. My next three children all read at 5 years old, some earlier in that year and some closer to 6. My last child is nearly 6 and not reading yet but I have seen how easily it will fall into place as soon as she is ready and she is showing signs that it will click soon.
As a mother who has been homeschooling for some time (my oldest has now graduated), I can promise that it doesn’t honestly matter if children read at 4 or 7. When they do learn, they quickly catch up. You can’t tell any difference now between my 19 year old who read at 3 and my 17 year old who read at nearly 6. They both love to read and write, and are both intelligent young women. Their younger brothers were the same, and I’m sure my little girl will also be the same.
The important thing is not to teach reading early but to teach a love of books and learning from the start. Have faith and as long as you can maintain that love of books and learning, the rest is easy. 🙂

03/10/2017 at 3:34 pm (3 years ago)Thank you for taking the time to write such a beautiful comment! I wrote this blog post several years ago, and in that short time I have to say that I have come to agree with you…it really doesn’t matter when they learn to read. What is far more important in instilling a love for reading and learning.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience with us. ☺

24/11/2017 at 5:42 am (3 years ago)Salaam Jemma. I was wondering what was your experience of basing your curriculum on the well trained mind. I noticed that this year you are not including it in your curriculum. Thanks
Gemma Somauroo
24/11/2017 at 12:30 pm (3 years ago)Salaam Hasina. Yes, we initially followed the well-trained mind but have switched over to a Charlotte Mason approach. The WTM is an excellent curriculum. It’s very thorough and uses some great books, but it didn’t suit my children. They found the program too structured and didn’t allow for enough time to play and go outside. However, I still return back to the WTM for book and resource recommendations.

28/11/2017 at 5:09 am (3 years ago)Hi,
When I started homeschool with my daughter last year we did a lot of math. She loved sorting things by size, she loved counting and then going a step ahead and putting 1 more or 1 less. I had to have many different activities ready for her each day for math. Now we have bought Fred (life of Fred) into our homeschool and she loves it. thank you for letting us know about CTCmath, I have signed up for the free trial and it looks amazing. I can’t wait for my daughter to try it.

01/12/2017 at 9:04 pm (3 years ago)Asalamu Alaikum,
You have listed very useful advice here, thank you. I am also teaching my 5yo ARABIC and learning the meanings for myself. Its very strange, I think, that we get taught how to recite the Quran but aren’t taught the meaning. I want my child, InshAllah, to be able to read, understand and speak the Arabic language.
Once again thank you for the amazing ideas! I am sure to write them down and use them in my homeschool.

02/12/2017 at 1:07 am (3 years ago)Asalamaoalaikom,
Thank you for your post, as always it is very instructive.
We speak 2 languages at home and my son (2 year old) got a third one from his part time daycare. However none of them is Arabic, which we want him to learn for religious reasons. So I am thinking about using some of your ideas to introduce Arabic even if I don’t speak it myself, after all we can learn together. Does Charlotte Mason mention a limit regarding how many languages should be taught at once, in order to avoid confusion? Or is it the more the better?
JazakaAllah kheir.

26/12/2017 at 1:27 am (3 years ago)What does narration mean?
Gemma Somauroo
26/12/2017 at 12:12 pm (3 years ago)It’s a term used by Charlotte Mason to mean “telling back”. For example, I would read a page to my son from his history book, and he would have to tell back, or narrate to me, in his own words what he remembers from that page. Then I wold write it down for him, or he would write it himself.

Hits right home. Sometimes we have such huge expectations from ourselves that we forget that we don’t HAVE to fulfil them all. Gemma Somauroo
04/02/2018 at 12:17 pm (3 years ago)Alhumdulillah! For children of 2 years-old I would focus on reading aloud to them as often as possible, give them plenty of time outdoors playing and begin teaching them simple Islamic manners (saying salaamz, JazakAllah khayr, eating with right hand etc.). In my humble opinio, you don’t need to worry about anything more structured at this stage. Perhaps start thinking about that at 4-5 years old.

13/10/2018 at 3:26 am (2 years ago)Assalamu Alaykum Sister Gemma,
Thank you for sharing this. I agree so much that History is not only important but is more important now than ever. I tried to read out Loud Martin Ling’s biography of the prophet to my children, but it was way too advanced for them (They are 9 and 6) So I switched to a children version inspired by that same book. It is available at FonsVitae.com I highly recommend it as a starter. I am sharing this because you mention not having pre-read the books. This might have changed and I would love to know your opinion. The book I am referring to is “The life of the prophet Muhammad” by Leila Azzem and Aisha Gouverneur : https://fonsvitae.com/product/the-life-of-the-prophet-muhammad/
Gemma Somauroo
14/10/2018 at 4:22 pm (2 years ago)Walaykum assalaam,
Oh yes! I am very familiar with that book. In fact, I have been reading from that book to the children for the past 2 or 3 years! They were ready to move on from it, which is why we are now using the Martin Lings book. Like you, I highly recommend “The Life of Prophet Muhammad” by Leila Azzam for children who find the Martin Lings book too difficult. It’s a wonderful book! Thank you for taking the time to highlight this point. Insha’Allah others will benefit. JazakAllah khayr.

09/02/2019 at 2:27 am (2 years ago)Thank you for bringing this to our attention. However —
What about social media consent? Using children’s bodies and images (even stock images of random children who may or may not have given consent/permission) on the internet/instagram/facebook is also part of consent and yet we see thousands of well-intentioned mothers/bloggers use their child’s bodies and faces (“even if they are covered or far away”) for their own gain/purpose. Perhaps, children have given their permission but a two-year-old probably has not. I think if most mothers explain fully what social media consent is to their children with honesty and all of the potential dangers, children would not give their permission. Children are in their fitrah and don’t understand the potential of millions of random strangers staring at them. I feel that parents are not giving the entire picture of what social media is to their children, use their images, and that is not fair to them. This is just as important as bodily affection consent. Just my two cents as a children’s rights advocate. -Peace and Love. xo

12/03/2019 at 8:46 am (2 years ago)Walaykum assalaam Maryam. MashAllah! I think it’s wonderful that you want to supplement your son’s education at home. He’s lucky to have you!
As he is at school, you want to make sure he is getting enough time to rest and play, as well as learn.
So at first, I would advise you to take it slowly. To begin focus on topics that he enjoys, and slowly progress.
If he is too tired after school, just do the work on the weekend. Perhaps reading something to him over breakfast or dinner would also work for your family.
Thank you for asking such a great question Maryam. JazakAllah khayr

09/03/2019 at 6:36 am (2 years ago)As salamu alaikum, Gemma! Would you say that either 100 Lessons or The Ordinary Parent’s Guide are appropriate to use with a child who can already read simple phonics books (Phonics stage 1+) in order for them to move on, eventually towards chapter books? Or would they be too basic, focusing on letter sounds and word formation? Thank you!
Gemma Somauroo
12/03/2019 at 8:41 am (2 years ago)Walaykum assalaam Susan. Great question!
I think the majority of these books would be redundant for a child at that level!
Instead, I would recommend the readers “Reading Literature” by Free & Treadwell. I think they’ll be the perfect level for your child insha’Allah

04/05/2019 at 10:21 pm (2 years ago)I will have to enlighten many Muslim readers. We have just returned from.Hucks restaurant at Woburn without eating a meal which was pre-ordered as Halal ,but when we arrived told the meat wasn’t available. We waited an hour to be told we are trying our best to make something up for you but the food was inedible. They definitely don’t cater for Halal at Woburn. All of us have got back starving and no other food options as it’s nearly 10pm.Cant understand why they would agree to take our request when it’s not easily available. Very disappointed
Gemma Somauroo
19/10/2019 at 3:07 pm (1 year ago)Oh my goodness! That’s terrible service. If they didn’t have the meat available, you should have been told straight away. I hope you were able to enjoy the rest of your holiday Maliha.

28/08/2019 at 6:09 am (1 year ago)Asalamulaykum ma’am, have been following your articles for sometimes now really enlightened jazakillahukhayra.
However I have a challenge of HOW BEST TO HIMESCHOOL MY 3+ SON. some said teach sounds first others will say letters. Any help will really be appreciated ma’am. How do I go about either ways
Gemma Somauroo
29/09/2019 at 1:34 pm (1 year ago)Walaykum assalaam,
In my humble opinion, the best thing you can do for a 3 year-old is give them time to play freely outdoor, spend time together so they can imitate your example, reading to them and play together. If you really want to begin academic work, teach them through games and songs. Don’t expect your lessons to last more than 5 minutes or for that child to sit still during them! Most of all, enjoy your 3 year old! Its a wonderful age 🙂

21/09/2019 at 2:17 pm (1 year ago)Salaam,
Could you comment on how Spelling Workout is in terms of British vs American spelling conventions?
Gemma Somauroo
29/09/2019 at 1:30 pm (1 year ago)Great question Mirina. We have come across some differences in spelling of a few words, but not very often. Of course, I would advise you to quickly check through before your child begins his/her daily lesson to make sure that the spelling for that day is correct for “British English.” In my experience discrepancies rarely happen.

03/10/2019 at 4:05 am (1 year ago)Hi, thank you for the list of recommended home schooling books, it’s certainly exciting to know there so many homeschooling advocates.
My question, would you recommend home schooling for a single parent mum, with a minimum income?
My son’s are 5 and 8, I feel strongly about the design and structure of mainstream education system and what it’s promoting.
But I am super nervous, and really need help in deciding of I’m being too bold by attempting to go down the road of homeschooling or if the struggle is worth it.
Gemma Somauroo
04/10/2019 at 6:26 pm (1 year ago)Salaam Syeda,
I do know some single parents who have homeschooled their children. It’s not an impossible goal to have. Facing the challenges of homeschooling alone could be hard, but if it’s something you’ve considered and planned ahead for, then it could be done.
Best wishes – Gemma

I’d like to thank you for your lovely blog and content that you provide. Although I’m an older mother and I don’t consider myself a beginner (we’ve homeschooled since the beginning) , your blog has a blessing to me and my family. I look forward to reading more of your posts (once your baby is older) inshAllah.
May Allah (AWJ) bless you and your family!

16/01/2020 at 11:06 am (1 year ago)JazakAllah for sharing these brilliant ideas Alhamdulillah. It’s been a goal of mine to learn the 99 names as my kids know more of them (from learning them @ school) than I do! I think the creative right brain activities linked to the memorization capability of the left brain will be just the thing I need to get them to dig deeper into their understanding of the names & to get me to finally commit them to memory inshaAllah Aameen. JazakAllah khayr kindest soul!

16/07/2020 at 5:15 am (7 months ago)Salam sis thank you for every advise and may The Al Wahid The one who has created everything bless you and your family always.
It’s been few weeks I had started teaching the 99 names of Allah to my kids by writing one name of Allah on the white board with it’s meaning and leaving it on the board for a week plus with a dua that says pray with me. Also we go through the names on line with the flash cards with Tariq the tigers flash card and then we discuss the name and get the children to draw the name in Arabic and write the meanings underneath in their text books and at bed time they have a tasbee which they pray the name that they learned for a week for 100 x untill a new name is written on the board. Also listen to different 99 names nasheed on YouTube.

12/08/2020 at 6:37 pm (6 months ago)Assalamu alaikum Dr. Gemma, thank you for the great ideas. I have been using the names of Allah (swt) as the foundation for my preschool Islamic education. I am a preschool director in California and teach the Islamic section of the day. After a short discussion or story read about a name we do a craft. We have used the same idea you had for the name of Allah but to teach Al-Wahid where they paint, fill with glitter or sequin a large # 1 and at the bottom of every name I always print out a short sentence highlighting the goal of the name, for example ” Allah is Al-Wahid, He is One and only one, he has no father, no mother or no son”
We have done
Al-Malik with a crown craft
Al-wadood with a heart craft
Al-Khaliq with a painted earth globe
Al- Baseer with eyes craft
As-Samee’ with a picture of an ear that is cut up and numbered and they have to assemble the puzzle to reveal the picture.
Ash-shafee with a painted medicine bottle and a cut out spoon
Al-aleem with a big question mark in the shape of a jigsaw puzzle that they assemble
Al-hafith with them drawing or glueing pictures of their family members within two big hands.
Al-a’laa with an outline of a large upwards arrow and sticky dots to fill and we have done Al-Qawi and Al-Ghani as well.
The idea is to make a book at the end of the year with a craft on each page representing a name of allah and a concept or a sentence on the most important aspects about HIM to know as a child.
Your post inspired me to add Ar-Razzaq and Ar-Rahman.
