The Best Ways to know if you’re Doing Enough | Homeschool Schedule

Homeschool Schedule

“Am I Doing Enough?”, this question can wreak havoc on your homeschooling schedule, no matter what stage of homeschooling you are in. It is one of the most frequent questions that we hear from homeschoolers.  When you constantly wrestle with the worry over whether or not your children are learning everything they need to learn, it can make you feel drained and question your abilities, so how do you determine whether you are doing enough in your homeschool schedule?

Homeschool schedule

In Episode 60 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share what you can do to help ensure you are doing enough in your homeschool schedule.

The key messages are to

Check state/charter school requirements for schedule and number of hours. We usually have higher standards for ourselves than other people put on us.

Are you developing key skills and reading alot?

There will be gaps in your children’s learning when they leave home, whether your homeschool or they go to mainstream school.

Your job is not to fill them with everything they will ever need to know, but just to take them from where they are, to the next step.

Look deeper into why you are questioning your homeschool schedule. Is it really a question of, “Am I enough?”

I’m So Lonely | Loneliness Advice for Mums

loneliness for mums

Being a mum is amazing! Being with our children every day is such a blessing, but it can sometimes feel lonely too. “Assalamu alaikkum sis. I’m very emotional and sad and crying at the moment while typing I’m homeschooling my 3yr old and nearly 7-year-old Alhamdulillah academically they are doing well but unfortunately where I’m there is not many homeschool meet-ups but still we often go here and there. In Episode 58 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share some advice on how to deal with loneliness while homeschooling.

What we really need to consider is:-

  • Is it really loneliness, or is there something else going on?
  • Overcome your fear of rejection – you are enough. You are worthy of love and friendship and meaningful relationships. You don’t need anyone else’s approval when you have your own.
  • Do something that scares you every day
  • Serve others, in whatever form that may take
  • Connect more deeply to those who have existing relationships with
  • Take care of your physical and spiritual well-being

My Husband is against Homeschooling! What can I do?

Our Muslim Homeschool Book

In episode 55 of the Raising Mums podcast, we talk about what you can do if your husband is against homeschooling.

This episode was inspired by a question from a mama inside our Homeschooling course for Muslim Parents, Launch Your Homeschool.

Sister X said,

“I have spent the summer researching home education including the course. I am thoroughly convinced home education is best and that I am very passionate and capable. I’ve bought so many books….

Now my husband has become very anti-home education. He believes it’s best, however, he wonders what the point is if we aren’t definitely going to home-ed up to university (I’m saying we start with primary and see how it goes). He wonders how are our kids going to cope with the real world. Also, he cannot differentiate it from being a SAH (stay-at-home) wife, so he expects I would be doing more than if I was at work e.g. the house should be spotless, there should be three robust meals etc however if I was at work he doesn’t mind if I can’t keep up with the housework.

He thinks the sacrifice isn’t worth the benefit basically and would struggle to value my contribution when the school can do a good job for free. He is also worried that we have no family support.

I’m at a loss of what to do and not sure how to convince him. I’m just disappointed really, I know I can’t pursue it further without his agreement, but am heartbroken not (to) try home educating when I am so devoted to the idea.”

No Time to Homeschool? A Muslim Homeschool Schedule

muslim homeschool schedule

How long does homeschooling actually take? Do I really have time to home educate my kids? Here’s a real-life look at a Muslim Homeschool schedule…

When considering homeschooling, as parents we worry that we will have to fill so many hours of the day teaching our children. Homeschooling is not school, we are not replicating a school at home! The beauty of homeschooling is that we do not need to start at 9 am and finish at 3 pm.

Muslim Homeschool schedule

In Episode 47 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share how much time homeschooling really takes!

WATCH THIS VIDEO!

Real-life Muslim Homeschool Schedule

Homeschooling doesn’t take as long as learning in school because:

  • You’re working one-on-one, can tailor the learning to the child and can move through the material faster
  • There is no time wasted with classroom management tasks
  • Homeschooling will probably only take a few hours per child each day, depending upon their age
  • You can homeschool at whatever time suits your family’s routine

How to Start Homeschooling | It’s NOT what you think!

how to start homeschooling

Setting yourself up for success when you start homeschooling can be a challenge. As parents, we struggle with confidence when starting this journey. The key is to realise that homeschooling is a lifestyle. It changes the way you live and yet you need to design it around your family.

how-to-start-homeschooling-its-not-what-you-think

In Episode 46 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share ways to reframe the way you look at starting your homeschool journey.

WATCH THIS VIDEO

How to Start Homeschooling – It’s not what you think!

Reconsider the way you are planning to start homeschooling:-

  • Don’t rush into a full day of school from day one. Begin slowly.
  • Begin with a subject that you or they enjoy.
  • Don’t begin with where they are “behind”
  • Observe your child – how they learn, what lights them up, and where they struggle
  • Learn about homeschooling through books, podcasts, and blogs.
  • Get familiar with the law where you live. This e-book is Really useful!

Dealing with Naysayers | Home Education

Home education How to deal with naysayers

As homeschooling parents, we have to overcome many obstacles and hurdles, to provide out children with the education and lifestyle we want for them. When you first begin, one of the biggest barriers to home education, is dealing with naysayers.

In those beginning months and years of home education, many of us are fragile. The slightest bump in the road can shatter our confidence and leave us questioning our decision to homeschool. And so, when people around us find fault in our homeschooling, it can send us into a negative spiral, of self-doubt and shame.

Home education | How to deal with naysayers

This Blog-post may contain affiliate links. Please see Disclaimer for more information.

So what do you do when someone tells you that you shouldn’t homeschool your children?

In episode 34 of the Raising Mums podcast, I discuss how to deal with naysayers, in a way that will leave you feeling empowered, rather than ashamed.

WATCH THIS VIDEO!

The key to dealing with naysayers is to identify if they are truly coming from a place of concern, or simply feeding their own ego.

In both situations, put yourself into their position and respond with love and compassion.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t stand up for yourself. If you are being mistreated, you must! But do it with compassion, and you will leave the situation feeling more empowered, and confident in your decision to home educate your kids.

How much does Homeschooling Cost?

how much does homeschooling cost?

Let’s talk money! How much does homeschooling cost?

If you’re trying to plan ahead, and work out if home education is a feasible dream for your family, you need to know how much it’s going to cost.

You need real figures, real numbers!

how much does homeschooling cost?

Typically if you’re searching online for the cost to home educate your children, you’ll hear a lot of advice that sounds something like,

“Homeschooling is possible for families of every budget. With careful planning you can homeschool for very little.”

And honestly, I’ve said that myself!

But after thinking about it, I realised that that statement is not very helpful at all!

What would be more helpful would be a number of how much it costs a real family to homeschool their children today.

And that’s what I’m going to do here…

I’m going to tell you how much homeschooling costs our family!

I’ve NEVER seen this done before, but in this episode of Raising Mums

I get out my calculator and talk about:
?How much does Homeschooling cost each year
? What are our biggest expenses?
? How could we reduce these costs?

Being honest about the costs of homeschooling will help you to know if homeschooling is truly a realistic ambition for your family, and it’ll help you to plan ahead.
