The Half-hearted Homeschooler | Finding your Passion for Homeschooling

homeschooler

We start the homeschool year enthusiastically but sadly, the passion to teach our children sometimes begins to fade. Even adults can get bored if they’re doing the same old routine every day. We may start to chose a half-hearted approach as the daily demands of caring for a household and the intense effort required as a homeschooler can drain even the most dedicated parent.

homeschooler

In Episode 72 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share that it is ok not to always be passionate about homeschooling!

  • If you don’t feel passionate about homeschooling, it’s ok! That’s not a sign that you shouldn’t home educate your children.
  • Long-lasting passion comes after putting in the work; after gaining experience and learning new skills.
  • Don’t expect it at the beginning.

How to Take Trips with Kids (and Survive when it All Goes Wrong!)

Trips with kids

Among the countless benefits of homeschooling is flexible scheduling. This means your family has the freedom to learn whenever and wherever you want because the whole world is your classroom! Taking trips with your kids is not only great for learning and socializing but also for creating memories for the entire family. Unfortunately, sometimes, even with all the best intentions, things don’t go as expected. So how can you survive the setback?

In Episode 65 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share some tips to get your family out and exploring.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Taking trips, outside of your regular routine, creates memories and heart connections.
  • Don’t discount the small – the joy lies in being together.
  • Plan for the worst – pack well , research, prepare the children ahead.
  • Be present with your children – not distracted by worry or stress, or your phone.
  • Expect something to go wrong on your trip, and when it does know that walking through that difficulty together pulls you closer and makes your relationship with your kids stronger.
  • And if you handle it well, it will amke their connection to Allah stronger too.
  • When it goes wrong: make dua, encourage your children to make dua, be flexible, recall others who faced adversity, remeber verses of Quran or a Hadith.

Homeschooling with a 2 year old- Stay Sane and Keep Everyone Learning!

Homeschooling is often challenging but homeschooling older children can be especially frustrating when you are juggling homeschooling with a 2 year at home! Almost every homeschool mum has been through this, you are not alone! So how can we try and balance the needs of everyone and ensure learning does happen even with toddlers wandering around grappling for your attention?

Homeschooling 2 year old

In Episode 64 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share ways to face the challenge of homeschooling with a toddler at home.

Homeschooling with a 2 year old, without losing your mind!

  • Consider what motivates your 2 year old to behave that way? Does he want to join in? Is he curious? Is he lonely or bored?
  • Create a consistent routine that your toddler will become used to.
  • Set up the house for success: toddler proof the common areas, special toys for school hours, collect old workbooks for your toddler to reuse, and hide anything that can makes noise or a mess.
  • Children can take turns to entertain their little brother or sister.
  • Plan independent work for the older children.
  • Learn to surrender to the chaos. Admit that this stage of homeschooling is hard, but it does come to an end. You can only do what you were meant to do. Submit to that.

The Best Way to Deal with Homeschool Haters | Homeschooling UK

Homeschooling UK

Sometimes you are confronted with people who don’t value or approve of homeschooling. This is a common problem here in the UK, where voluntary homeschooling is a very uncommon choice. These Homeschool Haters can bring you down. They can make you have self-doubt and feel despair by challenging your decision to homeschool. So what is the Best Way to Deal with criticism and Homeschool Haters?

Homeschooling UK

In Episode 63 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share the Best Way to Deal with Homeschool Haters.

The Best Way to deal with Homeschool Haters is to:

  • Measure the advice against two criteria: What is the intention of the person? AND Do they know what you know?
  • Understand their perspective; they are hurting, they are broken because perhaps they were not brave enough to live their own way.
  • Are you diluting yourself for people? Are you trading in the life you want for your children for the apporval of others?
  • Positive change in the world begins with positive change in the home. Be the leader you were called to be.

The Best Ways to know if you’re Doing Enough | Homeschool Schedule

Homeschool Schedule

“Am I Doing Enough?”, this question can wreak havoc on your homeschooling schedule, no matter what stage of homeschooling you are in. It is one of the most frequent questions that we hear from homeschoolers.  When you constantly wrestle with the worry over whether or not your children are learning everything they need to learn, it can make you feel drained and question your abilities, so how do you determine whether you are doing enough in your homeschool schedule?

Homeschool schedule

In Episode 60 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share what you can do to help ensure you are doing enough in your homeschool schedule.

The key messages are to

Check state/charter school requirements for schedule and number of hours. We usually have higher standards for ourselves than other people put on us.

Are you developing key skills and reading alot?

There will be gaps in your children’s learning when they leave home, whether your homeschool or they go to mainstream school.

Your job is not to fill them with everything they will ever need to know, but just to take them from where they are, to the next step.

Look deeper into why you are questioning your homeschool schedule. Is it really a question of, “Am I enough?”

In Episode 58 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share some advice on how to deal with loneliness while homeschooling.

What we really need to consider is:-

  • Is it really loneliness, or is there something else going on?
  • Overcome your fear of rejection – you are enough. You are worthy of love and friendship and meaningful relationships. You don’t need anyone else’s approval when you have your own.
  • Do something that scares you every day
  • Serve others, in whatever form that may take
  • Connect more deeply to those who have existing relationships with
  • Take care of your physical and spiritual well-being

My Husband is against Homeschooling! What can I do?

Our Muslim Homeschool Book

In episode 55 of the Raising Mums podcast, we talk about what you can do if your husband is against homeschooling.

This episode was inspired by a question from a mama inside our Homeschooling course for Muslim Parents, Launch Your Homeschool.

Sister X said,

“I have spent the summer researching home education including the course. I am thoroughly convinced home education is best and that I am very passionate and capable. I’ve bought so many books….

Now my husband has become very anti-home education. He believes it’s best, however, he wonders what the point is if we aren’t definitely going to home-ed up to university (I’m saying we start with primary and see how it goes). He wonders how are our kids going to cope with the real world. Also, he cannot differentiate it from being a SAH (stay-at-home) wife, so he expects I would be doing more than if I was at work e.g. the house should be spotless, there should be three robust meals etc however if I was at work he doesn’t mind if I can’t keep up with the housework.

He thinks the sacrifice isn’t worth the benefit basically and would struggle to value my contribution when the school can do a good job for free. He is also worried that we have no family support.

I’m at a loss of what to do and not sure how to convince him. I’m just disappointed really, I know I can’t pursue it further without his agreement, but am heartbroken not (to) try home educating when I am so devoted to the idea.”

No Time to Homeschool? A Muslim Homeschool Schedule

muslim homeschool schedule

How long does homeschooling actually take? Do I really have time to home educate my kids? Here’s a real-life look at a Muslim Homeschool schedule…

When considering homeschooling, as parents we worry that we will have to fill so many hours of the day teaching our children. Homeschooling is not school, we are not replicating a school at home! The beauty of homeschooling is that we do not need to start at 9 am and finish at 3 pm.

Muslim Homeschool schedule

In Episode 47 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share how much time homeschooling really takes!

WATCH THIS VIDEO!

Real-life Muslim Homeschool Schedule

Homeschooling doesn’t take as long as learning in school because:

  • You’re working one-on-one, can tailor the learning to the child and can move through the material faster
  • There is no time wasted with classroom management tasks
  • Homeschooling will probably only take a few hours per child each day, depending upon their age
  • You can homeschool at whatever time suits your family’s routine
