I’m So Lonely | Loneliness Advice for Mums

loneliness for mums

Being a mum is amazing! Being with our children every day is such a blessing, but it can sometimes feel lonely too. This podcast is inspired by a recent email we received, and if you are on the same journey and you have ever felt lonely and isolated, this loneliness advice for mums can help you too.

“Assalamu alaikkum sis. I’m very emotional and sad and crying at the moment while typing I’m homeschooling my 3yr old and nearly 7-year-old Alhamdulillah academically they are doing well but unfortunately where I’m there is not many homeschool meet-ups but still we often go here and there. I have felt lonely and feel very sad for the kids too. Today my husband was asking shall we put them to school  I don’t know what to think or say instead sitting and crying Could you please suggest me any advice sis. Jazakallah.”– Sister S

In Episode 58 of the Raising Mums podcast, I share some advice on how to deal with loneliness while homeschooling.

What we really need to consider is:-

  • Is it really loneliness, or is there something else going on?
  • Overcome your fear of rejection – you are enough. You are worthy of love and friendship and meaningful relationships. You don’t need anyone else’s approval when you have your own.
  • Do something that scares you every day
  • Serve others, in whatever form that may take
  • Connect more deeply to those who have existing relationships with
  • Take care of your physical and spiritual well-being

My Husband is against Homeschooling! What can I do?

Our Muslim Homeschool Book

In episode 55 of the Raising Mums podcast, we talk about what you can do if your husband is against homeschooling.

This episode was inspired by a question from a mama inside our Homeschooling course for Muslim Parents, Launch Your Homeschool.

Sister X said,

“I have spent the summer researching home education including the course. I am thoroughly convinced home education is best and that I am very passionate and capable. I’ve bought so many books….

Now my husband has become very anti-home education. He believes it’s best, however, he wonders what the point is if we aren’t definitely going to home-ed up to university (I’m saying we start with primary and see how it goes). He wonders how are our kids going to cope with the real world. Also, he cannot differentiate it from being a SAH (stay-at-home) wife, so he expects I would be doing more than if I was at work e.g. the house should be spotless, there should be three robust meals etc however if I was at work he doesn’t mind if I can’t keep up with the housework.

He thinks the sacrifice isn’t worth the benefit basically and would struggle to value my contribution when the school can do a good job for free. He is also worried that we have no family support.

I’m at a loss of what to do and not sure how to convince him. I’m just disappointed really, I know I can’t pursue it further without his agreement, but am heartbroken not (to) try home educating when I am so devoted to the idea.”

SOCIALISATION and Homeschooling | Are Home educated kids missing out?

When considering homeschooling many parents are worried about socialisation and homeschool. By not sending them to school, parents worry if their children will be socially ‘deprived’ if they will be able to fend for themselves from bullies, and as parents will we be holding them back?

Socialisation and Homeschooling

  • Homeschooling allows us to cultivate a child’s inner circle of close relationships that have a strong influence on a child
  • Can intentionally add more diversity into a child’s social circle
  • Can protect from many negative influences but not from all negative experiences

Choosing Books for Children | Buy, borrow or bypass it?

mother and daughter on sofa reading book

Choosing books for children has never been so hard! With the huge numbers of ever increasing children’s books available, deciding which one you’re actually going to get is an indomitable task.

Consider this. When you go to the library, how do you choose from the thousands of books that are there, which ones you’ll actually take home? When you stumble across a book online, how do you know if it’s a “We’ve got to have this,” or if it’s a “Nope. Pass!”?

books for children

Is it just a matter of making an informed decisions by reading the back cover? Should we put our trust in the publisher’s social media marketing and influencer reviews? Or do we literally judge a book by its cover?

In this episode of the Raising Mums podcast, I share three things to look for when choosing books for children.

Enjoying Nature with Children | Outdoor Activities

boy in gray knit hat

Being outdoors is good for your children. It’s good for everyone! However, finding outdoor activities that you and your children enjoy can be challenging.

Scientific discovery continues to reveal all the benefits of being outside; including the benefits of sunlight, the microbes in the soil, and even the mood-boosting effect of the colours of nature.

But as Muslims, we know there is something more. It’s not just about looking at nature, but looking beyond it at the One who created it.

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” – Albert Einstein

Despite knowing all the benefits, outdoor activities with children can be stressful. It can even feel weird and awkward! And when the kids get grumpy, you wonder, “What is the point of this?”

In this episode of Raising Mums, I talk about how you can enjoy nature together with children even if you don’t like being outside!

Dealing with Naysayers | Home Education

Home education How to deal with naysayers

As homeschooling parents, we have to overcome many obstacles and hurdles, to provide out children with the education and lifestyle we want for them. When you first begin, one of the biggest barriers to home education, is dealing with naysayers.

In those beginning months and years of home education, many of us are fragile. The slightest bump in the road can shatter our confidence and leave us questioning our decision to homeschool. And so, when people around us find fault in our homeschooling, it can send us into a negative spiral, of self-doubt and shame.

So what do you do when someone tells you that you shouldn’t homeschool your children?

In episode 34 of the Raising Mums podcast, I discuss how to deal with naysayers, in a way that will leave you feeling empowered, rather than ashamed.

WATCH THIS VIDEO!

The key to dealing with naysayers is to identify if they are truly coming from a place of concern, or simply feeding their own ego.

In both situations, put yourself into their position and respond with love and compassion.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t stand up for yourself. If you are being mistreated, you must! But do it with compassion, and you will leave the situation feeling more empowered, and confident in your decision to home educate your kids.

How to Homeschool in a Lockdown | School Closure

How to homeschool in lockdown

The government announced that schools in the UK would not reopen this January 2021 for at least 6 weeks. This has thrown many families into a state of worry and, in some cases, panic as they come to terms with the fact that they will have to homeschool their children through this lockdown.

Families are concerned how this lockdown will affect their children’s education, and want to know how they can effectively homeschool them.

Parents also want to know how they’re going to be productive and get everything done, whilst also homeschooling their children.

In this episode of Raising Mums, I share a realistic and sustainable way to homeschool your children during the lockdown, and give you several time management hacks to help you stay productive during this difficult time.

I hope this has helped you if you’re suddenly homeschooling your children during this lockdown.
